Pro tip: Adding Boundaries
Use boundaries to make simple maps more difficult and create endless variations.
A great way to elevate your training on Routster is by adding boundaries (straight lines) or boundary areas. By placing these on a map, you can make a simple map much more difficult—for example, by cutting off a passage or forcing a more roundabout route. This greatly enhances the technical challenge.
This technique also gives the feeling of having multiple maps from just one single map, as different versions can feature completely different boundaries and route choice problems.
How to use it
- In-app editor: You can add boundaries directly in the Routster app. The major benefit of doing it in-app is that you can easily edit them in the future to quickly create other versions.
- Course setting programs: You can also draw boundaries using external tools like OCAD or Purple Pen before exporting your map.
Why it works
Constraining the playable area forces the algorithm — and you — to find route choices you'd never see otherwise. It's the closest thing to having ten new maps for free.
Combine with the parameter guide to crank up num_random_points for even more variations.
